OUTPATIENT SURGERY

Outpatient surgery is an increasingly popular option for those who require low-risk surgical procedures without the need for an extended hospital stay.

What is outpatient surgery?

This is a surgical procedure that does not require an extended hospital stay. Unlike traditional surgeries, where the patient must remain in the hospital for several days, outpatient surgery allows the patient to return home a few hours after the procedure, provided their initial recovery is stable.

Outpatient procedures are performed under local or regional anesthesia and are primarily used for low-risk interventions, such as:

  • Cataract surgery.

  • Dermatologic surgery (such as cyst removal).

  • Laparoscopy (diagnostic or treatment procedures).

In many cases, the incisions are small, which contributes to a faster and less painful recovery.

Recovery and follow-up

One of the main advantages of outpatient surgery is the quick recovery. Although patients can return home the same day, medical follow-up is recommended to ensure healing progresses properly.

Post-operative follow-up may include:

  • Follow-up visits to monitor the healing process.

  • Specific instructions on wound care and medication management.

  • Scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure the procedure was successful and that no complications have developed.

Outpatient surgery is an increasingly used option due to its convenience, shorter recovery time, and reduced costs. It is ideal for procedures that do not require extended hospitalization, and its success depends on proper pre-surgical evaluation and appropriate post-operative follow-up.
